What happens when humanoids become really good at what they do. Everyone has access to them?
This is not about technology anymore. It is about the start of the Human-Robot Symbiosis Era, a time when humanoids do not just help us. Change the way we live, work, learn and see ourselves.
1. Economic Transformation
- Labor Market Revolution: Humanoids can take over jobs that’re dangerous, boring or physically demanding like construction taking care of old people making things and delivering goods. This can make us more productive. It can also mean a lot of people lose their jobs.
- New Job Categories: We will see new jobs like training humanoids helping humanoids understand humans making sure humanoids are used in a good way and controlling personal humanoids.
- Abundance Economy: If humanoids are cheap and good enough the cost of many things can go down a lot.
2. Social and Psychological Impact
- Companionship: Humanoids can be friends to people or people who are disabled.
- Identity Questions: When a humanoid looks and acts like a human how do we know what it means to be a person or to be friends or to love someone?
- Social Dynamics: Will people really care about humanoids? Can this mean people talk to each other less?
3. Ethical and Philosophical Challenges
- Rights and Responsibility: Should humanoids have any rights?
- Safety and Control: How do we make sure humanoids do what we want them to do and do not hurt us?
- Inequality: Who gets to have a humanoid first? Can this make the difference between rich and poor even bigger?
4. Technical Path to Symbiosis
The robots that make this future possible will likely have:
- Safe and strong bodies
- Computers that understand the world in real time
- Computers that work like our brains and regular computers combined
- The ability to understand things like what we see, touch, say and feel
My Personal Vision
I think we are moving towards a future where humans and humanoids work together.
I do not think machines will control us or that humans will stay away from machines.
The best future is one where humanoids do the boring and hard work and humans focus on being creative making friends exploring and finding meaning.
Humanoids will not replace Human-Robot Symbiosis Era they will help Human-Robot Symbiosis Era.
Getting to this future in a safe, fair and equal way will be one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century and also a big opportunity, for Human-Robot Symbiosis Era.
